Diana,

Good point. I figure that whatever is going to happen, it will eventually turn out for the best. I think we all feel that things in our past were greatest because we enjoyed them so much. The kids we see now will probably think that their time was the best. I 'm for having more reunions, parties, and fun and enjoy what we have. Any one for a get together  next summer?????wink

As a former co-worker at Super Burger (seeT-Bone's profile), I am so fortunate to have a friend who came to see me in Seattle, spent time with (several of us) at Cliff Sanders' last outing in Las Vegas (and attended his funeral), take Kathy and me to CowTown Fort Worth, and always attend the D/FW mini-reunions. Our outings, our discussions topics, our friendship with you, Birthday Boy, have been the greatest! Love this 50-Year Reunion photo. (you know, but others may not recognize you with Lynn Harris and Elizabeth Gwartney Lowney). All three look a little under the weather. :-)

Happy Birthday, Terry Boone (alias T-Bone).

Happy Birthday to Terry! Many happy returns of the day. Every birthday celebrated after age 70 is a very special one I’m inclined to say! Anyway, I think everyone in the picture Jim posted looks great and like they were having a good time. Here’s to more of the same in the future!

Hi Everyone....

I hope this post finds you all thriving in this beautiful Fall Season. I have noticed one very divided country.....weather-wise divided, that is! Holy cow, the Northern's are getting much cooler weather AND even snow. The Southern's, us, are still living in the 9o's!! Next week, however, it promices to be our first cool-down in over 90 days! I have to laugh, however, we look so forward to the cooler weather, but when we get into th we real cold, we are hoping the hot weather will rescue us!!

I remember in about 2014 I went to visit my sister who still lives in Roswell. I was so homesick I went with the idea of potentially moving back home. About the 4th day of heat, and it was in October, my feet were swollen like elephant feet. My clothes were so darn uncomfortable I was miserable. My sister said, "I want you to sit out here on my patio in the shade." I set out there with a cool drink for all of 10 minutes. I was sweating. I was wishing I had gotten a stronger drink...ha. Then, I looked out over her back fence. I saw solid brown dust. I thought, "what the heck....ha, only not heck!" I went inside and asked her, "What's with that brown wall of dust?" She said, Oh that, that's a habub." Like it was a common thing I should have recognized. Are you kidding me, I don't remember ever seeing anything like that when I lived here. Oh, how soon we forget. The visit ended with my telling her she was going to have to move to Texas because as much as I missed my heart-love, Roswell I was going to stay here in my "Camelot."

On another note. I am really happy to see classmates engaging in different conversations. In the world which has been thriving in social media, it really does prompt folks to write on many different subjects. I joined Facebook with great reluctance. I learned, however, that I had been missing out on a lot of family events and pictures galore. So, that part I really did enjoy. I, who thinks I have seen a whole lot in my life time, learned there were a whole lot who used it as a platform for a host of subjects which included politics, religion, and some pretty racy stuff. I learned quickly that all the stuff I was seeing needed for me to hit the scroll down button. Some of the stuff like my own sister-in-law and a couple of Nieces tempted me to launch some pretty strong rebuttal's. Some of them were so strong, I found myself calling them on the phone and having one on one conversation's about their posting's onto my site. So, this is what I am prompted to say about our postings of late. I love it that the participation has increased. I hope it will continue. Out of such a large group of classmates we are bound to have some that will drop out from time to time. If it happens that we start losing classmates due to the postings, we will let you know. Presently, we have about 35 classmates whose emails are not responding. There are so many reasons that could make that the way it is.

Dear Mardi,

I am always excited when you post. Your experiences are so well told that I find myself laughing out loud. Should have been a writer.

About habubs, I had not seen one before I was in Phoenix at my parent'.s house. We had gone out to dinner and we were just leaving to go home. We just got in the car when the dirt attacked. We didn't start home til it cleared a little and it started to rain Mud Balls. How exciting! I could do without seeing one again. After we got home we sat in the kitchen and watched the storm. Then a loud bang and a flash of light (No it wasn't the Lone Ranger)  a microburst hit the house next to ourssurprise and a chunck of the roof exploded as we watched. Yikes!!!!! Scared the s##tout of me.

Life can be scary!

LONG: Allow me to tell you a classmate friendship story, and maybe a couple other class related items at the end. As you know, BOYCE McFARLAND and I have been friends since high school. Good enough friends, in fact, that Kathy and I are on a luxury 5th-Wheel, nationwide travel trip made possible by Boyce and his wife, Barbara, giving us their 38' Montana with 4-slideouts. As you may remember, Barbara passed away a year ago from cancer. Boyce was a devoted husband who took absolute care of Barbara for over a year in the home. They had been married well over 30-years and have traveled over the world. Yes, Boyce, served our country in military intelligence with the USAF so they went all over.

After Barbara's death, Boyce could not stay in the home. It brought too much sadness after a year of bedside care so Boyce went to stay with his daughter in NC for a few months. This daughter was from his first marriage to a Swedish blond, Annie, he met in England.

It turns out that Annie was a widow from her 2nd husband and, as she went to visit her daughter, Boyce and Annie had discussions. There were two other actions at work (my words, not his). First, the strength of a young love and all the remembrances. Second, while our kids see the end of their life clear across the country, we see the end of our life at the county line, maybe even the city limits. Whatever happend 40 years ago is forgotten.

So, Mr. Military Intelligence was doing some calculations in his head about our similarities and he determined while Kathy and I were having "Too Much Fun" (yes, his words) that we had gone 38,000 miles (41 states) in 18-months and he had gone 24,000 miles in 6-months .... yes, trip to Sweden where former family members and friends were enthralled to see him again, to the Calgary Stampede, to Colorado and New Mexico, and back to the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina where he just purchased a very sweet two-story log home. Boyce message me and asked what we were doing?

We were having a glass wine at the Wines of the San Juan at the moment. What was Boyce and Annie doing at the time? You guessed it. They were also having wine on the deck of their new home.

Boyce's calculations were correct. So this is a story about classmate friendship and a rare 2nd chance at love. I am so lucky to be considered a friend by Boyce McFarland, and I am so thrilled with how is life is turning out after his horrific loss. Continued blessings to you, Boyce.

You folks know I love live music. This past weekend I got to be the host (and security) at the Winery for AUSTIN GIORGIO (#2 in 2018 'The Voice') and his guitarist, JON DRETTO. These young men are not only incredible musicians and vocalists, but great guys with their heads screwed on right. I think this is a classic photo of them - Jon is on the left.

JUDI ADAMS MORRIS and ELIZABETH GWARTNEY LOWNEY, you were both missed.

CHIP KING is home after his surgery on his foot and was doing very well the last I heard.

In yesterday's birthday comment about TERRY BOONE'S loyal friendship to CLIFF SANDERS and me, I failed to say the same about JIM BROWN. Jim B was also with us in Las Vegas at Cliff Sanders last hurrah, and also attended Cliff's funeral along with BOYCE McFARLAND.

An unknown classmate stopped by the Winery sometime back and mention he no longer receives his correspondence from the class or me. My sister-in-law failed to get the name. The only person I know that connects the Winery to me is DANNY DANIEL but I am certain he is still in contact. Anyone else?

MARDI GONYEA NICKLIN has a YouTube or something coming out entitled "Bloom Where You Were Planted." I think that would apply to all of us and I am looking forward to seeing her posts.

I will try to find out if JERRY ROBBINS has a music gig in Albquerque within the next couple of weeks and if so, I will announce.

Everyone, please participate. Let us know if anyone is sick or needs prayers. Let us know if any classmate has passed and need to be put on the memorial page. Write and let us know what is going on in your life, even if you think it is not fun ... we still care. Help us hunt for lost classmates. What great stories everyone has shared. So Mardi, what is Jim referring to... a book, a blog or YouTube video? Inquiring minds want to know! (And where can we find it?) Yes, I have my own stories regarding “haboobs” in Phoenix. When I married my second husband in 1974, he was in the Air Force and his first duty station was in Phoenix at Luke AFB. We didn’t call the dust storms Haboobs back then. I worked on the 18th floor of one of three skyscrapers in Phoenix for a company called Cudahy (pork packing company). I was the benefit analyst for retirees of the company. During monsoon season in the summer, we would gather in the corner of the building on the 18th floor and watch the dust storm blow across the valley; an amazing sight to see. (We did not call these storms haboobs then.) (If you are traveling to a desert area during the summer, you will want to know about haboobs, haboob frequency and what to do if you find yourself in one of these summer dust storms. Haboobs can be scary to watch and dangerous to be in). Fast forward to 2009 and we were deciding where we wanted to retire after traveling the world for 35 years. Our daughter and family had moved to Prescott AZ three years earlier so it seemed logical to start looking in AZ. My husband’s former boss had already retired to the Phoenix area and raved about the area being a great retirement Mecca. I vaguely remembered the huge dust storms and heat so hot it melted your windshield wipers. But, we ignored those little nudges and pressed on. Soon we were ensconced in the Del Webb retirement lifestyle until the day the monsoon season arrived and with it our first experience of a “haboob”! This time I wasn’t on the 18th floor of a high rise watching the storm advance across the valley but experiencing it blow over the top of me! You cannot drive, walk or see in them. You must stop if you are in a car and it’s even better if you are in a building. Fast forward three more years. Daughter and family got new jobs and moved to Florida. They continue to extoll the virtues of the Florida lifestyle. We succumb to the slow moving pace of Florida living after visiting several times and experiencing a few more “haboobs!” We never looked back and I enjoyed ten more glorious retirement years with my wonderful lifelong friend and companion my husband Paul. The Lord took him home this last winter. After a reconciliation of forgiveness of past hurts, the Lord took my daughter’s biological father and my first husband home this summer. My only uncle went home to be with the Lord on my birthday this year February 14. After a season of loss, I am looking forward to a new season for 2020. It may not contain a new love, but it will contain a new connection to serving others in whatever way the Lord guides me. One thing that happens when you age past 70...you don’t judge others as harshly as you once did. You want to make a difference in someone else’s life even if it’s only for a short time. I am happy for those people who have found love a second, third, fourth time. Whatever. Love IS what makes the world go round and it’s how I’m defining my life. I can only wish the best for all of you. Here’s to a better and healthy 2020!

Hello, it's meeeee again.......ha

Thank you Deb and Karen, you are the best. It's fun when you have a cheering section....just makes me entertain more...ha!

Jim, thanks for the great stories and picture's, love them. I am thrilled for Boyce. A new lease on life is something that can kick-start an extension to life, we sometimes never expected.

Jim mentioned my new "launch." I "wish" I was ready to launch on UTube or a website, but at the moment I am not there. With much encouragement from my older sister, Madge, I have however, launched my ministry, "Bloom Where You Are Planted Ministry." I am an inspirational, motivational and humerous speaker. Most of my targeted groups include those who are incarcerated, those with drug dependencies, those dealing with Cancer and surviving Cancer, and those dealing with PTSD (not just military PTSD but molestation as a child or adult, and maritial abuse. Granted, this is a whole host of, in many cases, dibilitating life challenges. I don't try to fix them or be a fixer but offer inspirational words that can help them "get-up" and "get through" those pot-holes in life. I have had the good fortune of surviving so much and have lived to find a whole lot of things to still laugh about, so I am blessed. I thought, or should I say, I gave myself, a whole lot of time, to write and even publish. The bottom line is, I am just not disciplined enough to do so. I have segments here and there but haven't done the whole publication. My most recent segment, which I keep adding to, is entitled, "I Can't Make This S#@t Up" I know, I'm not supposed to cuss but sometimes I can't help myself....ha!

Karen, great story Thank you for posting and sharing. I came right into the middle of one of those muddy haboobs about 15 miles outside of Roswell one time. I was trying to drive into Roswell. My son was with me and we were both so paniced because we could not see who was in front of us or who was behind us. We couldn't see if we were even driving in our lane. We couldn't pull over. Visibility was zero. We had to keep moving because we were afraid if we stopped that someone would run into us. We were afraid we would run into the back of anyone in front of us. It took 45 minutes to get through those 15 miles. We were traveling at a snails pace. We stayed in it until we got to NMMI. We saw trees uprooted and fallen. When we got home, we saw where people had all kinds of wind and rain damage.

Sending all of you my love and blessings. Luv N Hugs.

LAURIE SHUEY ANDERSON with her husband, Andy, who she recently celebrated their 50-year wedding anniversary.

What you may not know, or remember, is Laurie is our only Gold Star Widow in our class. Laurie lost her first husband in the Vietnam War and to this day, she is still giving scholarships in his name. I do not know all the details, but this weekend Laurie is in Las Cruces presenting a college scholarship to the recipient. Laurie, what a wonderful thing you have done for a half-century. You are a credit to the class of 1966 and a blessing to remember the warrior that we lost. Blessings to you and Andy for the rest of your days.

This is the first that I had heard about the scholarships that Laurie was giving in the name of her deceased husband.  What a nice way of keeping his memory alive!  I just talked to Laurie last week.  She is always so upbeat and positive, inspite of all the severe problems that Andy is having due to his time in Vietnam and his encounter with agent orange.  I wish I could be as strong as her.   Makes me reaize my problems are pretty miniscule, by comparison.  My wife and I are looking forward to visiting them in the next few weeks.                      On another note, I am finally following through on taking Rick Marcum's advice and going to Machu Picchu.  My brother and I leave Wednesday for Lima, then Cusco, then the Sacred Valley.  We then do a 3.5 hour hike up Huayna Picchu peak and then down into Machu Picchu.  Get back a week from Thursday.  One more thing to cross off my bucket list.

Mardi,
You and Laurie should go on tour! You’re both so darned much fun to talk to !!

Terry, you must be in fantastic shape.

My news is that Fred and I are joining my kids and grandkids in Donegal, Ireland.
My oldest grandson is getting married there the first week in November. We will then have the whole Rusty Mackerel pub to ourselves for the reception.
Oh, that’s gonna be rowdy and fun.

Fred and I will then fly to Florence for one last hurrah before my arthritis takes hold. LOL

Best to all of you,
Peggy

What wonderful news from those of you who have posted lately. Many great family memories to add to the memory books. I will be living vicariously through all the travels and anxiously awaiting the photos to follow. When I share these stories of travels with my local friends, they are amazed that we have such a lively and active group of retirees and former classmates still so active and sharing their experiences on our class website. The credit really goes to Jim White and Mardi Gonyea Nicklin who are the best cheerleaders and motivational people I know! Of course, none of it would happen without the strong admin and web support we have in Bill Leggett. If I’ve left anyone else off this list, I apologize in advance. I am just so thankful that this connection is available and I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know each of you again through this site. I encourage anyone reading this to let your hair down,  take a chance, live a little dangerously and share your news with your fellow former classmates. You never really know whose life you will touch and make a difference in. Terry, enjoy your adventures in Peru. Peggy, I can’t think of a better place to have a wedding celebration! Laurie, enjoy your time together with your husband and I know you are making each day together magical. Jim and Kathy, I love knowing you both are enjoying each day and encouraging us all to share our stories and pictures. Bill, keep up the great work on the webpage and adding those cute funnies when we need something to lighten the mood. I am looking forward to enjoying more adventures and pictures!

Love those classmates. There is a bond that few can understand. Allow me to tell you about a few of our classmates.

One of the Class of '66 greatest musicians is BOBBY ALLISON pictured here with his saint of a wife, Ernie, and my saint of a wife, Kathy. We visited them early this year and may actually see them again next week if the stars line up correctly. Bobby and Ernestine live in two places, lovely Ouray, Colorado in the summer and wonderful Longbeach, Mississippi in the winter. How great is that? They will be leaving Ouray for Longbeach in about three weeks.

Looking out of Bobby and Ernie's back deck in their Mississippi home. I know you see the small body of water in their complex, but do you recognize the large body of water across the street from their place? Yes, the incredible Gulf of Mexico with some of the sweetest white sand beaches around.

MARY HUSEMOLLER is alive and well in her old stomping grounds, Reno, NV. She and Bill lived there many years. She has been one busy classmate and we hope to hear a report from her once she has time.

KRIS ANDERSON SHEARER, our Math Goddess, has been holding out on us. Did you know she has been working at ENMU-Ruidoso for 7-years? I didn't, but LinkedIn told me she has. Hopefully all is well with Kris and she will report in sometime.

HAL HILL is alive and well. We missed each other in phone calls so I can only guess he is still in AZ. We hope Hal is enjoying life.

JERRY ROBBINS is still performing in and around Albuquerque, and also near his 2nd home in Colorado. This week he is in Colorado so Kathy and I have to miss his singing this trip while in NM. That is too bad.

MICHELLE AUSTIN KELLY did manage a trip to Wyoming and Washington State this summer. Her son will be deployed maybe this week ... so we had a good talk since my son is currently deployed. Do you think any parents watch current events more than parents of deployed military children? MICHELLE also keeps an eye on MARGARET NICHOLS KUENZLER which we appreciate very much. MARGARET is not on the class website anymore if you have been trying to reach her.

Special thanks for DEBORAH PIKE who helped us search for MARILYN "BUNNY" HILLMAN on the island of Maui. We could not locate her but we will ... someday.

Yes, MILDRED ANDREWS FORD is alive and well, although she seems to like the lurker status. Just kidding, Mildred, but we all would like you to write and tell us what is going on in your life. Mildred is very active in her church and following her grandchildren.

As for Kathy and me, we will be leaving NM for AZ next week. We do not have a schedule yet but do know we fly out of Phoenix Nov-15 and return from Seattle Dec-11. Where in Arizona will we be? I have not a clue, other than we might go see the New Christy Minstrels perform Green-Green in Quartzsite on January 11th again. If we go to Thousand Trails in Palm Desert, we will have to look up LINDA HENRY CROWDER'S mother in Palm Springs. BARBARA BUZBEE, do you still live there? LOUISE YBARRA CHRISTENSEN, thanks for your updates and support of the class.

Hugs to everyone.

Quick update . . . to get on Jim's "nice" list!

Last October my younger daughter, her older son, and I traveled to California to check in on my sister-in-law. While there, I managed to fit in a brief visit with Marilyn Miller Michael.  Great visit! Great trip!  My newly-13 grandson was also a really good traveling companion.

My oldest grandson is now stationed in Maryland with the Air Force, which seems to agree with him. His sister, my oldest grandchild, is in Ukraine with Peace Corps. She's matured quickly over there, and is enjoying teaching English. She now speaks Arabic, Russian, Ukrainian I presume, and German, having lived in Germany, Jordan, and western Ukraine. Her parents, my older daughter and her husband, took an exciting trip to visit her, and to see Romania, Poland, and Moldova.  Her photos were fabulous!

My anticipated summer trip to Colorado/NM was put off when I drove to Bar Harbor, ME instead, to visit a dear friend who landed in hospice care after a short bout with her 4th cancer diagnosis. Life just throws those punches sometimes.

This winter I hope to visit family and in-laws in NC & SC after the first of the year, and next summer I'm hoping to get to our denomination's General Assembly in Baltimore and visit friends and the few relatives who have stayed n the D.C. area. My niece there has promised me an opportunity to get back on a horse -- shh! Do not tell my orthopedist!!  I think perhaps a spa day right afterward would be wise.

Having driven a compact car for my entire adult life, I'm now enjoying the comfort - and gas-guzzling - of an SUV with the power to tote around a scooter for when I want to traverse even a block or so. Unfortunately post-polio hits back with breathing problems and other surprises just when you think you have all your hips and knees replaced and ready to go!  So I'm loving the luxury of my new wheels.  It's a whole new perspective (especially for a shorty like me!) and the first V-6 since I was in high school!  I'm still working, about 1/3 time, and I anticipate retiring in Rochester when the SUV lease is up. Then I'll give up the payments, the keys, and the insurance, and become better friends with Uber in Rochester!

Thanks, Jim and everybody, for keeping us all in touch!

It’s great to read about all your news Robin. I’m amazed that you are doing all your own driving across all the states! I don’t know why, but driving puts me to sleep so I have a difficult time driving very far... Thanks for sharing your news.

Mardi Gonyea (Nicklin)

Hi Robin,

I'll speak a good word on your behalf to tell Jim you need to be on his "nice" list...ha. I am so happy to receive you're life updates. I am thrilled for you that you got to have a visit with Marilyn. You are very brave to be able to maneuver that big vehicle. I would be running into everything in sight. Love hearing about your family.

My thoughts regarding my driving and hoping my 2004 Chevy which hasn't reached 100.000 miles will last 4 more years. I renew my driver's license next year, and I am thinking that will be my final time to renew. Although there are many of my older friends and folks here in my senior community who are driving while they are well into the 80's. I just don't think I will have the patience to drive that long. Being in a senior community, we have great riding options available. The plus side of riding on those is of course, no more mechanical and insurance expenses from owning a car.

So, you plan on retiring up North, close to where a whole lot of my Paternal ancestory came from and still live (Gonyea and Washburn), They are also in Malone, Syracuse and a couple other area's. I wish you great success with your plans.

So, classmates...are any of you thinking of hanging up your driving options yet? Giving up being able to just hop in the car and go to the grocery. go to doctor appointments, and just drive to grab a bite to eat is a tough call, for me, as I really love the freedom of having that option available.

Yikes, we got hit with the BIG coldfront...we went from 89 yesterday to 45 today!! Me, NOT being a lover of cold weather, opened my front door, felt the cold....said "Oh hell no!"....slammed it, turned off the air-conditioner and overhead fans and grabbed my socks!! Elizabeth and Judi I am sure you are laughing at me. I saw where you got hit with a huge snow storm way earlier than expected.

Sending my love and hugs

Robin E. Lostetter

Peggy and Mardi - thanks for putting in a good word with Jim. LOL!

And Mary . . . if I gave the impression I had everything under control, I must have been embellishing the truth!  There was a time when I thought I did, but I've learned that that's a facade . . . and today, it's not even that!  Since I chose to be an interim pastor for the last years of my ministry, I've lived 4 places in the last 9 years - 4 different cities/towns, and 3 different states. So when I moved in here, I didn't even bother unboxing most things.  Anyone who visits must think I'm either moving in or moving out!  Under control?  Hardly, but thank you for giving me the benefit of the doubt!

And now to Karen and Mardi re driving . . . I have always loved to drive!  And my new "Beast" is such a pleasure to drive - my only real luxury!  My 10 year old Corolla was in great condition, but I found the visibility difficult as I got shorter . . . and shorter . . . and shorter, and the seat got more compacted, and my neck hated turning hard more and more.  So I really wanted the safety alarms for nearby cars and pedestrians.  And a V-6?  Holy Smokes!  It's scary powerful compared to any car I've driven after selling my beloved Mustang in 1970!

But it was tough for several weeks getting used to the size . . . in fact, I dented my door (skip the boring details) because I couldn't see the distance to the low barrier, so it's already in the shop!!  It's a lease, so I have to fix it. I will probably NEVER parallel park it, but fortunately i have been able to park wherever I need to in this lazy little winery town.  And as for lengthy drives . . . I pull over and sleep for half an hour if I get sleepy. "Nobody's the boss of me!"

OK, this is more than I've shared on this page ever . . . I just finished a couple of major projects and am enjoying a relaxing afternoon -- 70s and sunny in Western NY State, mid-October!  Sat on the screened porch with the cats, watching the nuthatch, squirrels, adolescent male cardinal, and blue jays, and wishing the deer would make an appearance.  Tomorrow will be rainy, and by next week it will be seasonably cool. But today was gorgeous!  And I just chilled. So I've gone on and on, but time to wrap this up.  Nice to chat with y'all!!  Hope everyone  stays safe in this unpredictable weather and has fun at Hallowe'en . . . Bill,

I've been thinking about that for quite a while but figured that all the egg heads had found something wrong with that approach.

Good one.

My thoughts were a little more "mean".  Those worried about CO2 need to stop exhaling.  MY BAD!wink

Diana,

That's not mean, those are probably the guys who drive big gas guzzlers and cut down forests. People who don't believe in global warming need to be re-educated and made to plant 10,000 trees all by them selves.

Debbie,

Don't forget the "important" people who fly in their private jets before getting into a gas guzzler to protest the use of petroleum products.  Whatever happened to critical thinking?  It's certainly not taught in school any more.  Obviously the sacrifices will have to be made by us "regular" people.

I hate that they are making me into such a curmudgeon of me!  But I cannot go quietly.....    indecision
