Joe lived a few blocks down from me, and we played together as pre-schoolers and in first grade.  I always wondered what happened to him.  He was chubby and took a lot of teasing.  Anyone know anything about his adult life?

I did not know Joe Ely but I believe he started a successful insurance agency and invited John Russell in. When Joe died at an early age, John Russell kept running the agency until his death. I know John thought the world of Joe.

Joe's dad operated the agency for a long time and sold it to Johnny Russell in the eary 1980's.Following is a brief excerpt from Johnny's obituary - November 19, 2010:

In 1978, John had the opportunity to go to work for Bob Ely who owned the Robert V. Ely Insurance Agency in Roswell. He later purchased the agency from Bob Ely in the early 1980s. John was so appreciative of his dedicated staff, especially 19 years by Jeanne Smith and 4 years by Denise Childs. John operated the agency up to the time of his death and was very well respected within the insurance industry.

I remember Joe in Junior High School and remember that he asked me on my first date to the prom. His Dad drove us in a beautiful cadillac. I was glad that I had been asked by Joe because we had become friends that year and going with him was much less awkward than with anyone else would have been. I am sorry that he died young. He was a wonderful human being.

I grew up with "Joey".  His Mother, Maxine, and mine were very close friends as were his Father Ed and mine.  We, the Martin's, the Kilness's, and the Ely's were a closenit AF "family".  If my memory serves me right they lived close to Calhoon Park where the road formed a T.  One day they ended up with a car whose brakes had failed in their living room...was a bit of a surprise!  In any case, I was shocked when he died relatively young (he was a large man and had heart problems)--he was always very laid back and gentle person.  Hank Garrett

Does anyone know how I could contact Joe Ely's sister, Susan? She taught English at,RHS and was our cheerleading sponsor our senior year. I know she got married after we graduated, and I lost track if her.

Joe Ely and I met at Pueblo (North) It was my first time in public school since 4th grade. Joe was always very friendly and we had many good laughs after classes. I remember that in the spring, Joe asked me to the Prom. He was my first date. I remember that his father chauffeured us in a gold caddie. I was glad that I was escorted by a good friend. I am sad that he is not with us.
