Hank Garrett

Thought you all would like these pictures I took of the lunar eclipse earlier this week.  Had about a dozen folks over to follow it.  I'm "retired" from NASA JPL but still work 1-2 days a week to keep my hand in.  If you are in Pasadena, CA , let me know and I can arrange a visit to our Lab...need to know 2 days ahead, however.  Shutdown had only minor effects on us so far thankfully.

A HUGE Congrat. Bill....you know it is just so funny to me. As, when we were growing up our grandparents and even if we had great grandparents all seemed ancient...ha. Now, even with my brother becoming a Great Grandfather at the age of 69, just blew me away. He loves it because he can take his Great Grandson to know visit some of the military stuff, as he was career US Army. They are just enjoying it so much. I am already a Great Great Aunt several times. I know you are going to enjoy this a lot Bill.

Congratulations Bill! I became a great grandmother at age 65 and it only hurt a little bit! It has been a whirlwind of fun. Sometimes frustrating fun; especially during the temper tantrum years. Haha. Now she is 5 1/2 yrs old and just a crazy little girl enjoying life. And we are enjoying her! You will love your time with the little one!

Look who we found? Jim & Kathy's Excellent Adventures (Facebook group) continues and our travels led us to South Texas. We were in Austin this week (well, for a day and a half). Actually, we have been at Medina Lake for two weeks. Since we are at the lake near Kerrville, Bandera and LakeHills, Texas, we plan to go to San Antonio this coming week and hopefully see RHONDA BERNING ZINN. Then we will be heading towards the Houston area and, hopefully see BUTCH COLBERT, JIM HEAD, LOUIS BAGWELL, BOB and KAREN REAM, KAREN PATTERSON, CHUCK PARHAM, PATRICIA FRYER WALLER and MIKE WALLER, JOHNNY ALLEN, BARBY MITCHELL, HERKY VEACH, DIAN WINANS, BRENDA DAY and who knows who else? This is fair warning to these many classmates.

Yes, that is LINDA HENRY CROWDER with BRENDA HENRY WHITE next to her ... and, of course, JIM and KATHY WHITE in the back row. Thank you two for meeting with us and for bringing your wonderful mother, CAROL. Mrs. Henry, which some of you may remember, is a hoot and Willie Nelson lover; and still driving at 90 years of age ... but no one will ride with her.  LOL

The incredible LABAN STEWART with wife, BRENDA (GHS but Clovis graduate), met with Kathy and me at (where else?) Starbucks. They own a 5th-Wheel also and love their trips to the Texas Gulf Coast. What wonderful people LABAN and BRENDA are. They love living in Austin and are doing well there. Thanks for taking time to meet with us, even after dental surgery ... ugh!

As for other travels, TERRY BOONE and JIM BROWN left yesterday for Thailand. I suppose they are seeking manicures. Wow, I can remember when going to Carlsbad was a big trip. Speaking of Carlsbad, today I spoke with MARGARET NICHOLS and she still has her wonderful spirit, and also spoke with MICHAELE AUSTIN KELLY this past week and she just returned from her annual cruise.

Jack Compton

Jack Compton was born July 13, 1949 in Tucson, Arizona to Orville and Betty Compton. He passed away September 21, 2018 in Las Cruces, New Mexico following a brief illness.

Jack grew up in Roswell, New Mexico, he graduated from Goddard High School in 1967 and attended New Mexico Military Institute. He was an avid sports fan, especially college basketball, he loved listening to music, was a car enthusiast, and a fisherman. He played a mean game of dominoes, was quite the croquette player, and could pitch a horseshoe better than anyone. Jack was quite the fashionista wearing Hawaiian print shirts year round.

Jack and his partner Patty Lovato decided winters were better in New Mexico and permanently moved to Las Cruces in 2015. They enjoyed the sunshine, the southwest and the authentic Mexican food.Jack’s many adventures lead him to all parts of the United States, Mexico and Canada. He moved to Wyoming in the early 70’s to work construction. He lived in Wyoming on and off eventually settling in Pinedale. There he built a home, enjoyed floating the rivers, occasionally engaging in shenanigans and made friendships that lasted a lifetime.

Friends will remember Jack for many reasons and everyone has a “Jack Story”. His quick wit and his sense of humor will be missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, James Compton.

There will be no services per Jack’s request. At a later date his ashes will be scattered down the Green River where he loved to float and fish in Wyoming.

NOTE:  JACK COMPTON was class of '1967 but many of us knew him. He lived down the street from me growing up on Morningside Drive and I knew he and his brother, Jim, well. RIP, Jack.   Special thanks for Jim Napier for calling this to our attention.     -- Jim White

“Bobby and I spent the first thru the ninth grade at St. Peter’s. We spent hundreds of hours playing basketball, baseball, and football at Missouri Ave Park on Deming St. We also spent lots of time at 1209 W Deming where Bobby and his family lived.

Bobby was a great basketball shooter. Once our little troop of Catholic round ballers played Berrendo Middle School and we won. We didn’t have a coach, uniforms, just spunk!! Plus, we played b-ball everyday on the outdoor hoops on the play grounds at St. Peter’s before school, during recess, at lunch, and for a few minutes after school. Then, Bobby and I would head west on Deming until we reached S. Penn street. I would turn left and walk until I reached 1008 S Penn while Bobby walked straight to 1209 W Deming… only to repeat the following day.

Thank you Jim for posting these beautiful rememberances of each of these classmates lives. Although I didn’t know any of them, after reading these memories, I wish I would have had a chance to know them! My heart goes out to their families and loved ones. May they Rest In Peace.

Hi Everyone....

First I want to give a BIG Congrat. to Bill for his new addition of his Great Grandson. I hope you get to enjoy him to the max!

I would like to thank Jim for all his recent posts regarding the various passing of lives we knew throughout our life in Roswell. I will remember Jerry for a really long time, for sure. That guy loved life and he would do the most daring outrageous things ever! He had a half-brother who was much older than he, I called him Randolph, whom I dated for a short time. Jerry used to shoot pool with G.W., my first husband, ALL the time. The two of them were hysterically funny together.

I remember Jack Compton from when I lived on Morningside. Remember their family really well.

I am so thrilled that you got to see Linda Henry Crowder and her family. They are the sweetest people ever. Linda's Mom is just so very beautiful. My little sister just adores Brenda as well.

The classmates you are getting to see Jim and Kathy, I just love it for them and for you. A life filled with a whole bunch of reunions, just so super and so fun!!

I LOVE the picture you posted of Elizabeth and Judy on the front page....just priceless. If you put the three of us together, I garantee there might be some illegal activity!!.....because having THAT much fun would not only be dangerous....well, you probably wouldn't want to take us out in public!!....ha

Hope all of you have the most beautiful, romantic and lovely Valentine.....especially if you are wth your love, loved ones, and special friendships.  Luv N Hugs to all of you.

I saw first hand, the government "hand-outs" to the Kansas wheat field farmers all the years I lived there. It was a subject that caused great contention among the ones that accepted it and the ones who tried to survive and make a living at it.

Ehhhhh where do I begin. I know our site is not supposed to post articles or make comments relating to political issues and not discuss things that are religious based....but the article Bill posted originated in an article that occured in the Roswell Coyote newspaper which I thought everyone saw at the bottom of the posting. I found it interesting as heck for the time period it was written. I'm the one that came back with a political based comment....sorta' so I am the guilty party. I know we are on here to socialize with each other. I guess if anyone would like Bil or my pay for doing the job they can fill out an application and get hired to do it. Just saying. Luv N Hugs

I have usually enjoyed reading your posts, but regardless where you found this, it still has a lot of “current political jargon” in it.  Don’t you agree?  I just want to read about what my fellow classmates are doing.  I can get as political pissed-off crazy as the next guy...but I save that for my Facebook page.   Don’t drop out, but I think most would agree that we don’t want to turn our alum site into a political pissing contest.

Bill

I just couldn’t believe that Karl Mark...the author of, The Communist Manifesto, made the statement you posted, as the quote appears to me to be anti-socialist.  However, after researching the pig story, I learned that he did indeed say it.  In my opinion the quote is not in concert with the “communist” concepts.  To me the pig story sounds like many of the conservative - far right mantras.  So let me eat a ‘small’ plate of crow and lessen my questioning of the story’s authenticity ...and admit to the team that I verified the story was indeed stated by Karl Marx.  Now with my meek apology made (grumble, grumble), I would still suggest that we...as RHS or GHS alumni news letter followers, leave any political inference out of our dialogue.

And while I am in this highly unusual admission to an error, I must admit that the Goddard touch-down pass was thrown over me as I mis-read the play, and thus the 1966 game ended in a tie.  You can touch base with anyone on the field that night and they will validate my guilt.  (Oh, I have been wanting to admit to that horrible sin for 59 years.)

So how many “Hale Marys” do I have to say? (Or did I also miss-spell ‘Hale’ and it should be ‘Hail’.  It makes no difference they both sound the same.)

Rick

Good comments all.  Let me reply.  1)  I don’t want anyone to quit commenting..everyone’s doing a great job, 2) Biil, you are exactly right history does repeat itself...and you don’t have to go back that far to see it.  Does the word “Macarthyism” ring a bell..and that was in our lifetime.  And you are right, the fall of our country will come from within.  And if I can comment along the way that might reduce the inner scwabbling, I am going to do so.

There was recently a big hub bub about these pro football players falling to a knee.  And as an ex football player remembering how I needed to psych myself up before a game...I can assure you the national anthem was the very last thing that was on my flea-brain.  To me it is a football game...a time for the crowd to enjoy...that is unless you are playing in it.   And for the record, to me football was one of the most horrific memories of high school and college...but that’s another book to write.  So, I just really enjoy this little newsletter...hearing about grandchildren, travel, seeing current photos of folks.  Any comments that even touches a potential controversy, I start putting my hands over my eyes and start going “nay nay nay nay”.  Let’s all stay friends!!

And to Peggy, is it Hale Mary or is it Hail Mary?

Hey, just thought I’d excercise my bragging rights to say my son Zach was recently appointed by our governor  to the bench of the NM Court of Appeals.  This is the level between the NM District Courts and the NM Supreme Court.  He has been in private practice in ABQ up until now.  I don’t think I’m supposed to provide a link here, but if you want to see the press release you can likely find it by googling “governor fills appeals court vacancy.”  :)
