RUIDOSO PREREUNION: Our wonderful Laurie Shuey Andersen planned a prereunion for Thursday, October 14th at Donnie's Pit Stop Grill (2703 Sudderth Drive, Ruidoso) from 4:00 pm to 7:00 or 7:30 pm. Live Music will start at 5:00 pm.

Unfortunately, Laurie is now unable to attend. This isn't confidential but the change is due to her being in two hospitals this week and now in a care facility. She is fighting a real battle, as many of our classmates are. However, she decided to continue to personally underwrite ($$$) the musician  that was and is going to play for us. I do not know him or have heard him other than old YouTube videos but am told by the manager of Donnie's Pit Stop Grill that he is quite good and knows many classic songs we would enjoy. What we need to know right away is if you plan to attend. There is no additional cost for you to attend. You purchase your own food and drink. They do have some specials. In the meantime, this is the list of those that have so far indicated they will attend:

  • Denny Hunter   (Joanne)
  • Tim Livingston
  • Karen McCarty Fink
  • Jim Napier  (Linda)
  • Bob Newport
  • Molly Orr Crockett
  • Bob Oyler   (Anne)
  • Cecil Thrower
  • Charolette Ruffin McKay   (Roy)
  • Jim White  (Kathy)
  • Paul Zielinski

If you plan to attend, or withdraw off this Ruidoso list, please let me know.

Jim White   --  JWhiteCLU@aol.com  --  (206) 999-3154

NOTE: This gathering is NOT to replace the actual reunion in Roswell Friday and Saturday. This is only a supplement. If you have teenage memories of Ruidoso and would like to attend, please do. I am told Donnie's Pit Stop Grill is next door to Quality Inn and across the street from the Ruidoso Inn in the event you plan to stay the night.

From Bill Martin

My good friend and our own Dr. Hank Garrett (RHS '66)....quite a biography of his many accomplishments and awards listed below,  sorry for the bad formatting of his bio. I.T. Genious I am NOT.

Hank Garrett  in the news...again.  This presentation will tell you a LOT about stuff most of us mere mortals don't know about - nor even think about.  Look at some of these pictures of damages to our space vehicles....ever see ANY of this in the MSM?....Hank doesn't control the control of this Presentation - AIAA does, so forgive the 'asking for alms' at the bottom. I MAY be able to pirate a copy of it and post it here afterwards, but not sure.....

The Little Things that go Bump in the Night:
Space Debris from the Bottom Up…
by
Dr. Henry B. Garrett
AIAA Fellow
Principal Scientist
OFFICE OF SAFETY AND MISSION SUCCES

While now days we tend to think of “space debris” as collisions between large spacecraft, the truth is that the distribution of space debris ranges from the micrometer size particles to objects the size of the ISS or even a derelict rocket booster. Indeed, a 1 m2 surface in LEO can experience 100 impacts visible to the eye in a typical 5 year mission (e.g., the Hubble WFPC). To understand the true range of threats and take steps to mitigate their effects we need to consider the whole mass/velocity range of “debris” and, in addition, include the meteoroid environment in any potential impact studies — the so called MMOD (micrometeoroid and orbital debris) environment. In this short talk, I will first describe the Earth debris and meteoroid environments that currently threaten spacecraft operations. I will then describe simple methods for estimating collision probabilities with emphasis on particles of 1 g or smaller as these can in principle be protected against (that is, larger masses are very difficult to shield and maneuvering is currently the only known mitigation). The physics of hypervelocity impacts will be covered and methods for shielding a spacecraft from the effects of those impacts will then be briefly discussed. To conclude, the overall objective of the talk will be to provide an overview of the range of hypervelocity impact threats posed by the space debris and meteoroids, describe the physics of those impacts, estimate probabilities for an impact, and discuss possible methods of shielding and damage mitigation.

Dr. Garrett has a doctorate in Space Physics and Astronomy. He has over 150 publications on the space environment and its effects with specific emphasis in the areas of atmospheric physics, the low earth ionosphere, radiation, micrometeoroids, space plasma environments, and effects on materials and systems in space. While on active duty in the Air Force he served as Project Scientist for the highly successful SCATHA program which studied the effects of charging on spacecraft. For this he was awarded the Harold Brown Award, the Air Force’s highest scientific award. In 1992, he was selected for a joint DoD/NASA assignment at the Pentagon as part of the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization where he acted as the Deputy Program Manager for the Clementine Lunar Mission and Program Manager for the Clementine InterStage Adapter Satellite (ISAS). For contributions to these missions, he was awarded NASA's Medal for Exceptional Engineering Achievement. After a 30 years career in the USAF Reserves, he retired in 2002 as a full Colonel and was awarded the AF Legion of Merit. During his 40 year career at JPL, he has been responsible for defining the space environment and its effects on reliability for many NASA missions. He has also published several textbooks on the space environment and its impact on spacecraft design and reliability. Dr. Garrett is an international consultant on the terrestrial and interplanetary space environments and spacecraft reliability having worked for INTELSAT, L’Garde, NASDA, LORAL, CNES, and other organizations. In 2006 Dr. Garrett received NASA’s Exceptional Service Medal for “his achievements in advancing the understanding of space environments and effects.” Recently, Dr. Garrett co-authored with Mr. Albert Whittlesey the primary NASA standard on spacecraft surface and internal charging for earth missions. Dr. Garrett retired from full time duties at JPL in 2017 but continues in an emeritus position. He was made a Fellow of the AIAA in 2019.

Karen McCarty (Messina)

I am so sorry to read that several classmates are unable to attend the upcoming reunion. Between family support, health and surgeries, it seems we are all dealing with something. My thoughts and prayers go out to those struggling. We will post lots of pictures and think of each of you.

For those of you attending, I suggest you call and verify your hotel reservations. I made mine over a month ago at Baymont by Wyndham. I just called to verify and discovered they did not have my reservation!  They still have rooms available so if anyone wants to double check, I suggest you call.  Baymont by Wyndham +1-575-578-3582.

It grieves all of us that so many classmates are having such health battles. Even the healthiest of us have knees that need replacing, back surgeries pending and whatever. This 55-year reunion will be the last time we see some of our classmates. But if you make it there, you will have at least seen them one last time and let them know what they meant to you back in the day.

Along with my less-than-positive posting, I informed you that ELIZABETH GWARTNEY LOWNEY lost her precious son, Nick, two days ago. She was by his side as he passed. Sadly, some of you know the feeling of losing a child and can imagine the grief that is overcoming Elizabeth at this time. Elizabeth, we are praying for you and your family.

Putting on an event that has financial obligations like our reunion is a real challenge, made more difficult by classmates that can't make up their mind, have not paid, say they are coming but their spouse says they are not and so on. Please, if you are planning to attend, let us know for certain. We can collect at the door but we must know how many to plan for with some certainty. Thanks.

Jim,

I sent you a private email a couple of weeks ago but just to cover all the bases.  I had initally responded that Linda and I were going to make every effort to get to the reunion however, the health issues that each of us are dealing with constantly are just going to make it impossible.  I hope everone that can/does attend has a GREAT time.  We have made it to every past reunion.

I am happy my plane reservations are not on Southwest!  My son and his daughter were here over the weekend --left Monday evening.  They spent 24 hours in Nashville, but not all at the airport.  I am going to ABQ on American, and praying for on-time flights.  Very much looking forward to seeing those who can make it.

This may be the first time I have seen Bob O. since NMSU graduation time.  We had some interesting adventures.  I remember a Saturday afternoon in March we decided to hitchhike toward Abq because Bob knew some girls we should meet.  It was fine going up, but no girsls and going back after dark, nobody would pick us up on I-25.  We walked and huddled in any spots out of the wind until some guys going to reserve training about daylight Sunday morning picked us up!  That was my one and only hitchhike experience.  But having Bob as a friend in Las Cruces after his parents moved there was a treat.  His mother was a saint and their house was my favorite hangout.

I spoke too soon!  I just got a text from AA saying my flight tomorrow morning has been cancelled!!

Stay tuned for news at 10 -- tomorrow?

Apologize for the late notice but due to several conflicts, my wife Lupe and I will not be attending. Fortunately, no health problems here, just conflicting schedules with grandsons' and family schedules and a local baseball team named the Astros.. Hate to hear all the health issues some of you are dealing with but guess we are all getting to that age and stage of life. Prayers and best wishes for a safe journey and a great time to each of you who do make the reunion. God willing and the creeks don't rise, I will be there for the 60th!

Donna Birkenbuel

Hi all,

I am saddened to hear  about Laurie's health issues, and it explains why I hadn't heard back from her after our VERY long phone call about the pre reunion. We talked for over an  hour... like back in high school. *L*  It was a lot of fun talking to her.  I was waiting for her to send me some information so I could make some name tags.  Even though my name isn't on this list  (I could have sworn I saw another list WITH my name on it?) I am going to attend the party tonight.  I'll see the rest of you tomorrow in Roswell!!

After a lot of stress and waiting, AA got me to Albuquerque last night 12 hours later than the original plan. Rada and I are leaving for Roswell after an early lunch. See you this evening!

Robin E. Lostetter

Hi, Y'all! Thanks so much for posting the pictures!!

I have an odd request for while you're gathered. A note about Spring River Zoo caught my eye a few days ago & I thought - surely can't be the one in Roswell? But it was. And it described animals (bears & foxes in particular) in concrete habitats just as they were when we were kids - over 50 years ago.

Well, the article was by PETA & I wrote after doing a tad of "my own research," & said you must be wrong. Furthermore this is a municipal zoo, not a roadside zoo. I finally got their attention, and - da**! They were right!

If anyone wants to take a trip down memory lane to the zoo & confirm: https://support.peta.org/page/34513/action/1?locale=en-US, then perhaps we as a class could put pressure on the Spring River Zoo to accept offered funds to make humane improvements. I can't think of anything more appropriate from current & former [Rocketed] Coyotes than to help out our brother & sister bears & foxes!

With hugs to all,
Robin

Hi Robin!  I signed at the link and posted to FB...hope they get enough pressure that they cannot ignore us.  We should all do this,  Thanks for posting that, Robin.

Rhonda Berning (Zinn)

Thank you so much for this information, Robin.  I went to the link and signed up.  It is ablosutely horrible how those poor animals the Lord entrusted to us, to be treated that way.  Roswell's people should of put a stop to this LONG AGO.  I posted it on FB as well.

Rhonda & Berry - Thanks so much for checking this out & acting on it. Now, so will I!

Let's hear the Rockets & the Coyotes howl for the bears!

Well see how many you can pick out of the 55 yr reuion ....

10/23/21 03:48 PM #845

Roger Carl

I have been running ideas in my head all week about what to post about the 55th reunion.  Of course it was a great treat to just be with friends, but it was much, much more than that.  In our current pandemic ordeal with so much change, anger, loss and loneliness, it was a sweet emotional high for me.  Mostly, we see each other so seldom, that those of you who were such an important part of making me are forgotten.  But leading up to, during, and after being with the group, the memories come flooding back in waves of joy, laughter, sadness, and loss.

I heard my little sister and a couple of spouses comment that this class seemed to really like each other and enjoyed being together.  I sensed that as well.

My only regret is that I was so engrossed with a few folks, that I didn't get around to seeking out others.  I just ran out of time (and energy).

THANKS & Well done! --from me to our organizers, promoters, and workers for making it so easy to join in a fantastic reunion experience.  I am proud to be a part of the Roswell class of '66.
