I remember Larry very well.  I knew him as a kid, as we were both friends of Joe Gilbert and went to Pecos Elem.  At Roswell High he was one of the top math students.  At NMSU, we packed into my car at least once and went south of the border to hit a few bars in Juarez.  Larry was in the same co-op program I was in at NMSU, a satellite tracking program, which took us overseas.  We were in Pakistan, then in Mauritius where we lived in beach bungalows.  We were doing 12 on 12 off shift work with plenty of spare time, and we had a blast. A few of us were smoking some hash sometimes.  We used to walk down the beach laughing to tears.  But Larry got into meth, which you could buy off the shelf in Karachi.  His use of drugs elevated back in the states, and tragically he wrecked his life.  The last time I saw him was mid-80s, and he was working as a roofer at that time and apparently continued doing that for the rest of his life.

Larry definitely had a wild side.  He actually fought the Mauritius boxing champion.  He'd had some Golden Gloves experience in NM and not much else.  He trained for a couple months in Mauritius, and I sparred with him a couple times, but I disliked getting hit in the face, even with a protective mask on.  His boxing match was a national event with several bigwigs there; e.g., we met the prime minister.  Larry looked good for two rounds, but he lacked the stamina.  I think with a year of training, he would have been the champ.

RIP

I, too, knew Larry pretty well at at RHS. The only class I can remember taking with Larry was Mr. Dale's Unified Geometry class when we were sophomores. Berry is right about Larry's math skills; he & I were at the top of that class. My only real memory of that class was that we were in class the afternoon of 22 November 1963, when Mr. Williamson annoounced over the PA system that JFK had been assasinated. We all sat in stunned silence for the rest of the period - hardly a word was spoken.

Larry and I (and Joe Gilbert, too) bowled a Saturday morning bowling league at Wlylie's Lanes during our high school years. Larry and I usually bowled each other for big (at the time, at least) stakes: a nickel for each game, and a dime for series. We called it "nickel, nickel, nickel, dime", so the worst I could do if I lost all 3 games to him was lose a quarter. As I recall, it cost us about a dollar to bowl each week.   Boy, have times changed; a scratch league now costs about $25 a week to bowl.

I never was on a workphase with Larry at NMSU on the PS co-op program, but his exploits in Mauritius were legendary among co-op students. I didn't know about the problem he had with meth, but that would explain how he ended up roofing houses instead of doing engineering work for a career. Of all the illicit drugs available, it is among the worst, and toughest to quit using. He died in 2003, according to the obituary I just read.  Such a sad end to such a promising life.

RIP, Larry.

It just occurred to me that Larry died just 11 days before my younger brother, Harry, had a fatal bicycle crash.  Harry was a highly successful mechanical engineer who worked with world class scientists at Sandia Nat'l Lab.

I remember reading about Harry. Knew him from band, as we were both percussionists.  He couln't march worth beans, but boy could he play a drum set.   He was in a band in Las Cruces for a time, as I recall.  Bet you miss him, still.

Speaking of my recall....... it's really terrible of late.  Woke up about 03:00 this AM and realized that it was you that was in Mr. Dale's Unified Geometry class with me, wasn't it?   I think that's where we met.  Now that I've had time to relly think about it, I can't recall having a class with Larry.  We just hung out at the bowling alley a lot and spent all our loose change on pinball machines.

Yeah, you and I were the only sophomores in the class, and it really burned up some of the upper classmen that we skunked them all by a long shot.  That may very well have been where we met.  Neither do I recall being in a class with Larry.

I just reread that dialogue between Jim Sanders and me. It brings back such vivid memories for me of Larry, especially when we were both stationed in Mauritius.  We worked out at a gym, scuba dived with a diving club, snorkeled, drank, and smoked hashish walking down the beach in front of our bungalow, the sun setting over the Indian Ocean. Old memories, I encountered Larry again in the 80s after many years when we both lived in ABQ. He was doing roofing. He was mentally ill and paranoic. He knew I was into photography and he trusted me and wanted me to tell him whether there was some way to see around a corner in a photograph he showed me, because he thought there was something he needed to see there to make some legal case or something.  I simply told him it couldn't be done.  I found it stressful talking with him when he dropped by.  Now its 35 years later, and I'm thinking about him while swilling red wine and whiskey.  Marcum may ask again what's the point, where is this going?  Well, it simply is, and it's going nowhere.
